8 July 2011
On July 7th 2011 the Seliger-2011 youth educational forum hosted the RoboCross robot vehicle competition, organized by Oleg Deripaska’s Volnoe Delo Foundation and GAZ Group. The event saw automated vehicles built on the basis of GAZelle-BUSINESS vans – provided by GAZ Group to robotics teams in 2010 - compete against one another in various competitions.
RoboCross-2011 is the second event of its kink organized as part of the Robotics Programme by the Federal Agency of Youth Affairs and Oleg Deripaska’s Volnoe Delo Foundation.
Such student groups as the Moscow State Automotive and Road Technical University team, Red Eyes t (Kovrov State Technical Academy), MobRob (Saratov Automotive and Road University), Avrora (Ryazan State Radio Engineering University) and NAMT (Nizhniy Novgorod Automotive Technical College) all took part in this year’s RoboCross competition at Seliger. These promising young teams modified 5 GAZelle-BUSINESS vans for the competition by installing various automated self-steering systems (and received no outside help besides consultations from GAZ Group engineers and specialists from the programme’s recourse center). Last year’s participants were also joined at Seliger-2011 by teams from Ufa State Radio Electronics Technical College, the Lobachevski Research and Development Institute and the Moscow Aviation Institute.
For RoboCross-2011 the teams prepared vehicles for the higher difficulty “Scouting” scenario. On July 7th all of the teams demonstrated the ability of their vehicles to perform various tasks without a driver or any form of remote control – all by utilizing the GLONASS Global Navigational Satellite System.
The events of last year repeated themselves as Red Eyes from Kovrov once again became the winners of the competition. The students of the Nizhniy Novgorod Automotive Technical College competed on par with university students and took second place. And Avrora, the team from Ryazan State Radio Engineering University, came in third.
