16 May 2011
On September 1st the Department of History, Sociology and International Affairs of Kuban State University will begin the instruction of a group of 10 students majoring in “Archeology”. Until now, Russian archeologists were only trained in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Novosibirsk.
For 7 years Volnoe Delo Foundation has been operating the “Historical and Cultural Heritage of Kuban” Programme – a projects that aims to study the classical period heritage of the south of Russia and create a archeological monument of federal significance on the basis of the expedition in Phanagoria. Up until now all the archeological research in Phanagoria has been led by visiting specialists, but soon local scientists will be needed to work at the museum and research center, the construction of which is already under way in Kuban.
The joint effort of the administration of Kuban State University, the Volnoe Delo Foundation and the expedition in Phanagoria has allowed for the organization of the education of undergraduates studying in the field of archeology. The creation of this new major will include the equipment of a specialized library, the invitation of leading teachers from all over the country to Krasnodar, who will be visiting Kuban State with series of lectures – as well as the introduction of scholarships for students.
The archeologists-in-training will not only be given the opportunity to study and work at the Phanagoria expedition of the Russian Academy of Sciences, but will also be able to continue their education as postgraduates at Moscow State University and the Archeological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
