Phanagoria
Volnoe Delo provides support to the participants of Phanagoria archaeological expedition, carried out by the Institute of Archaeology and the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).
The Antique Museum and the Science and Cultural Complex (opened in 2012), includes the historical and archaeological museum, a library, laboratories and necessary infrastructure for deep and comprehensive study of the historical and cultural heritage of Kuban. These facilities have the added advantage of being located in the region where the archaeological monuments were discovered.
Phanagoria is included in the "Russian Book of Records" as the largest ancient monument in Russia. It consists of a settlement and a necropolis, which includes about 600 mounds and occupies about 900 hectares. Phanagoria was founded in the middle of the 6th century BC by Greek immigrants and for a long time was one of the two capitals of the most ancient Russian territory – the Realm of Bosporus.
The city is located on the shore of the Gulf of Taman between the modern villages Sennoy and Primorsky. Phanagoria existed for more than a thousand years – until the 10th century AD.
Research into Phanagoria began in the 18th century, but the city is still relatively unknown - primarily because of the scale of the cultural layers. Phanagoria represents truly unique cultural, historical and material value.
Extensive work is being done in the town's acropolis, necropolis, in the waters of the flooded parts of the monument, as well as in the estates surrounding the city – over the past eight years the excavation area has covered more than 7,000 square meters, to a depth of seven meters.
Spectacular finds made in the mounds of Phanagoria, are kept in the best museums in the country and the world, including the Hermitage Museum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and the Louvre as well as museums in the UK, Germany and other countries.
The results of the expedition have been presented at the world's largest scientific forums in Germany, France, Denmark, Greece, USA and more. In 2009, the discovery of the palace of Mithridates VI was included in “Archeology” magazine’s list of the 10 most outstanding discoveries.
